The food here was really good. Any place that has chips and cheese on the menu (you know, with the cheese sauce) is automatically great in my opinion. The chicken strip pita was also really, really good. BUT. I regularly use the Entertainment book app on my phone to decide where to eat, which is what happened today. Usually I use a mobile coupon and everyone gets really confused, but they figure it out and all is well. I have never been told I couldn't use them, which is good because I paid $20 for that book so I better be able to use it! However, today when I showed my waitress the BOGO coupon, she told me they don't take those because they wouldn't make any money if they did. This coupon was SPECIFICALLY for New York Red Hots (it has the address and everything on it). If a restaurant won't make any profit from BOGO coupons, don't give them out!! The real kicker is that she then let me use the other coupon on the app, which was for 10% off. So they don't have a policy not to take Entertainment book coupons (which wouldn't make sense anyway, since they opted in to the Entertainment book), they just have a policy to refuse any coupons they see that are actually good. I have never seen such shady business. I've had food this good at many other coney islands, so I will be taking my business elsewhere.

I go here for one thing: THE RED HOTS. It's official, Yelp. I'm hooked. Topped with a boatload of chili and onions, these large red hots have the perfect snap and spice to them. I even ate two in a sitting once! Imagine that! I've tried a few other menu items, which were alright. My boyfriend really enjoys the kraut dogs. It is cheap and the waitresses seem friendly. I'll stick to coming here during the day, though. My boyfriend and I stopped for a late night snack around 2am once and were kind of put off by the crowd...

Discusting bathrooms, rude girls, dirty floors etc. could only imagine what it looks like in the kitchen. Never again!! Yuck! Obviously the owner doesn't care I give it six more months before closing!

In fairness I should maybe eat here one more time before making my decision. But Red Hots is right down the street from my grad school and, after reading the favorable reviews on here I thought it would be a solid option to pick up something quick for lunch. I called in my standard coney island order - a grilled chicken salad with ranch. I always get big ol' salads from coneys and there are many who do them very well. NY Red Hots is not one of them. The order was ready in the 6-7 minutes it took me to get there after calling. The pita bread was wrapped hot and delicious. There were two generous cups of dressing, which was nice. But when I opened the salad? Ugh. It was small (they have two sizes of salads, I ordered the large)....enough for my lunch but I had purposely ordered the large size salad hoping to have some left over for dinner. Most coneys i regularly go to have only one size salad, that costs the same as the large at Red Hots ($7.15 once tax totalled) that are most definitely enough for 2 meals. Now quality trumps quantity, but this was a sad salad. A decent amount of chicken breast with some shredded cheddar cheese, but the lettuce was soggy and unappealing and the only other additions to the salad were a couple (and I mean a couple) small chunks of tomato, cucumber and a couple small rings of red onion. No croutons, no egg. After having no breakfast I was starved but that soggy lettuce didn't sit well in my stomach so I just pitched the rest. I only went in to pick up, it was small and dingy - not dirty but nothing to write home about as far as a coney or diner is concerned. And the 3 women at the counter stared me down intensely as I walked in the door and up to retrieve my order. Made me feel weird. A harsh review based on only one take out order, I do admit. But I really don't think I'm going to bother going back again.

People give this place a bad rap, but my girlfriend and I like going here. It's quiet, easy going, the food is dirt cheap, and they bring you enough food to take home for a 2nd or 3rd meal. It's a greasy spoon, so don't go in there expecting Applebee's or something. But of all the times we've been there, we've never had problems with the food or service... everyone was very friendly.

New York Red Hots Coney Island is a really long name for a small diner in Madison Heights. It's located at 14 Mile and I-75 and is open 24 hours. This is pretty much a typical coney island with the standard coney island fare: greek food, fried food and breakfast all day long. NYRHCI is one of the best in the area however because it seems like the food is homemade instead of frozen or processed food. Here you can get real meatloaf and homemade cabbage soup. You can get a lot of really fresh, flavorful food for not much money. If you're in the area, especially late-night, make sure you check this out. It's a nice change from some of the chain coney island restaurants in the area.

Okay I'm pretty biased with this place since this is our usual go-to for late night food. And I love it everytime. You can't go wrong with $4.85 chicken finger pita (fries are separate and around $1.50) at 2am. Food comes out fast. I have to be honest though...this is just your regular coney island...nothing spectacular. It's also kinda dirty inside and there are random shady peeps late at night. Pay at the register. Cheap food is always a win.

I've ordered carry-out here a handful of times in the last year and have generally received the service and quality I'd expect from most greasy spoon diners - if you had asked me before today, I'd have given this place 3 stars. Today, however, I opened my baby Greek salad and found a small fly stuck to a peperoncini, still very much alive, writhing and fighting to free itself from my lunch. I can forgive many things, but bugs as a garnish is a real deal breaker.

This place is one of my favorites! The food is always good and the portions are a nice size. The service is good and fast. The prices are good. It's your average coney or diner type place. Very casual laid back place. Not the cleanest most modern of places but the service, food and price make up for it.

This is one of my favorite go-to places for late night carry-out! They have a decent menu with selections of coneys, burgers, sandwiches, or breakfast. Everything is always ready in 15 minutes or less! Just don't go too late or you'll have to fight the bar crowd.

My GF and I came to this 24-hour Coney Island at a slow and odd hour. It was about 12:30am after we had been drinking for an hour or two. It was a late Tuesday night. The only customers here, and they were on their way out, were a group of Madison Heights Police. Needless to say, that sobered me a little bit. The waitress had a strong Russian accent, was brief and friendly enough. We started appetizing with some fried mushrooms. They were cheap, just around $3. The breading was heavier which was kind of cool and different, like an Italian bread crumbs shell, which made for thicker chewier fried mushrooms. The insides were hot and had tender mushrooms. Dipped in a ranch/Frank's Red Hot sauce - these were a winner. I then got 2 New York Coneys (not sure why the theme is so NY here, when it's mostly a Detroit Coney Island), and it came out with 2 longer than usual dogs and buns. Two if these bad boys were filling enough! The weiners had a snap, the chili was thick and tasty, and onions and yellow mustard was plentiful. Again these Coneys were onlyshy of $2/each and eating two of them side by side with knife and fork was very satisfying. My GF got a patty melt with fries. The fries were crispy and good. No complaints. The patty melt was juicy and beefy, with nice melty swiss cheese and kraut in the cheese. I had a bite of it and it was very satisfying. The toasted rye bread was quite thick however, so for people who don't like the bread to overpower the meatiness - this may have been a SMALL minus point. Overall, the food only came out to about $12, and we both left satisfied and we even had some of the patty melt & fries leftover. Though we went at a quiet, dead time - this was one of the better Coneys of the many Coneys of metro Detroit. I was pleasantly satisfied with the cheap, good heart food. I would definitely crown it as the go-to Coney in the Madison Heights area.

Great service and always good diner/coney food. If you are looking for a high class meal skip this but if you want a good diner meal come in. Bonus open 24 hours so you can always go in. Great staff and always has great staples like coneys, big omelets and burgers. Yum..

All I have to say about this place is OMG. I don't know what happened to this place but I mean how wrong and bad can a omelette be. Ordered two Greeks, added mushrooms for both not only it didn't have any mushrooms but all it did have was some old and burnt gyro meat and feta cheese. The eggs were tasteless completely, no butter no flavor at all. I didn't recommend this place for anyone. Good luck to the owners and the staff that's all I gotta say cuz they're not doing their job to make it happen.

I WILL NEVER BE BACK AGAIN!!! USE TO LOVE COMING HERE! MY SUGGESTION SPEND YOUR $$$ SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!!!!

As lifelong members of the Metro Detroit community surely know, there is little one can do but give in to cravings for coney island on a whim. There is not really that much of a better antidote to booze-soaked stomachs than late night coney. It's always a travesty to stare wide-eyed through the passenger window of a car after a late night, to only spot a coney island with an empty parking lot and dim lights. That sinking, disheartening feeling of dread washes over even the most modest of binge drinking partners in crime. Luckily, there are places like New York Red Hots that act as a beacon in the night to attract the debaucherous socialites like fish flies to a brightly lit street lamp. I used to frequent coneys that were more out of my way of getting home, until one drunken night enlightened me to the existence of NYRHs. Traveling up I-75, on our way back from a concert downtown, my mobibo application alerted me to a deal at a nearby coney. Like it made the difference between life and death, I instructed the driver to immediately exit at 14 mile. New York Red Hots was offering a free coney for just stopping in with mobibo! Elated, the crew indulged in our free coneys and bought some sides and drinks to wash away the drunk from our fatigued, ringing heads. What a pleasant surprise I must say, to find this coney island up to the highest of expectations. The portions were appropriate and the dogs had that slight snap when bitten into that sinks me into a temporal vortex of yesteryears and a good economy. Now, I know the necessity of stopping at Red Hots to establish a buffer between drunken night and pleasant morning.

Good coney/diner. The place seems pretty clean, the service was nice and the menu has something for everyone. Pretty typical selections of breakfast, sandwiches, coneys, salads, etc. The prices are very reasonable (ie: cheap), which is always a bonus. My boyfriend's breaskfast was huge and tasty (some type of omelet w/ hashbrowns) and my pancakes were good. I added on an order of fried mushrooms because I love them and everyone (on Yelp) said they were delicious--glad I did. They were awesome and cheap! Great to find another reasonably priced place with good food.

Too bad I found a coupon for this place in my local $ave book AFTER i had already went there: $2 off a $10 bill! That's a great deal especially since this place is really cheap to begin with... cheap in pricing not quality i mean. It's a good diner, went there late on a wednesday night, no one was there but a group of 5-0 lol The waitress was nice, probably a tad annoyed of us because we were being kinda picky and a little slow in ordering, but she hid it well and served us up right nice. I ordered a patty melt, they used really good deeply rye, rye bread, buttered and crisped to perfection over the griddle. The meat was juicy and the cheese was so ooey and gooey with some sort of relish or kraut sauce inside, that I didn't even need my thousand island dressing that i ordered prematurely to go with the sandwich. The fries were really good, thin and crispy, reminded me of Mc Donald's fries, but more fresh. My bf ordered 2 NY dogs, which were bigger than most chili dogs I've seen in my day. But they were basic good chili dogs. Oh but their fried mushrooms... now those were the BOMB diggity! The weren't battered like other places where the mushroom usually slips out of the breading when you bite into it and you're left with the breading in your fingertips. They really breaded those babies nicely so that the breading actually stuck to the shroom. Their mushrooms were also smaller and more bite sized so there was no need for the previously mentioned mishap to even occur. My only concern was the circulation there... it was COLD on the right side of the restaurant and hot on the other! And even the hot side that we sat on would immediately get cold when the heat would turn off... I think that place needs to be insulated better or something... Regardless, the food was cheap and we definitely left full and happy :)

the best coney island in detroit. i was lucky enough to grow up just a couple miles away from here, and ate here once a week on average from about 1991 (back when it was still called Onassis, "O'Nasty's" to my friends and me) through 2004. never too packed and always easy to get a table, this was my diner of choice for 3am drunken meals as well as weekday lunches and weekend breakfasts. every time i go back to Detroit to visit family, i make sure to eat at NY Red Hots at least once. most of the same folks have been working there as long as i can remember. the dog is exactly what it is supposed to be: natural casing, covered in chili, mustard, and onions and wrapped in a warm, soft, steamed bun. the chili seems to have a bit more of a kick than it's competitors. it's not "spicy" by any means, just maybe has a couple extra shakes of chili powder in there. my only complaint about the dogs? sometimes the onions aren't diced as fine as i would like... the chicken avgolemono is up to par. the chicken's shredded, not chopped in questionable chunks, so you know it's been cooked right: low and slow. the gyros are standard coney island gyros. the pre-made frozen strips slapped on a griddle you'll find at other coneys. not the ideal place to order gyros in detroit, anyway. can't speak for the chicken gyros...i've never ordered it. ...and the ranch is watered down with just the right amount of milk. as a youngster, this used to really annoy me. now and then, however, i find myself wishing that my ranch would run off my chunks of iceberg the way it used to at NY Red Hots. i love this place. however, as mentioned, the smoke can really be a problem here. especially late at night when all the drunks and truckers are there. it seems the restaurant's seating is about 75% smoking/25% non. but didn't i hear that Michigan is finally getting with the times and banning smoking this year? if true, i may just have to bump this up to a 5.

You can't beat places like this for breakfast. They can make a mean gyro omelet. Other then that it's a cookie cutter Detroit coney. Pros: They are a small joint that still serves Coke! Their cheap. Open 24hrs. Cons: I think they use a lot of frozen ingredients. For example, the hash browns are almost definitely frozen. I will keep going here as my coney of choice, the only deal breaker is if they switch to Pepsi, then they'll never see me again.

Great to find another reasonably priced place with good food.

the best coney island in detroit. i was lucky enough to grow up just a couple miles away from here, and ate here once a week on average from about 1991 (back when it was still called Onassis, "O'Nasty's" to my friends and me) through 2004. never too packed and always easy to get a table, this was my diner of choice for 3am drunken meals as well as weekday lunches and weekend breakfasts. every time i go back to Detroit to visit family, i make sure to eat at NY Red Hots at least once. most of the same folks have been working there as long as i can remember. the dog is exactly what it is supposed to be: natural casing, covered in chili, mustard, and onions and wrapped in a warm, soft, steamed bun. the chili seems to have a bit more of a kick than it's competitors. it's not "spicy" by any means, just maybe has a couple extra shakes of chili powder in there. my only complaint about the dogs? sometimes the onions aren't diced as fine as i would like... the chicken avgolemono is up to par. the chicken's shredded, not chopped in questionable chunks, so you know it's been cooked right: low and slow. the gyros are standard coney island gyros. the pre-made frozen strips slapped on a griddle you'll find at other coneys. not the ideal place to order gyros in detroit, anyway. can't speak for the chicken gyros...i've never ordered it. ...and the ranch is watered down with just the right amount of milk. as a youngster, this used to really annoy me. now and then, however, i find myself wishing that my ranch would run off my chunks of iceberg the way it used to at NY Red Hots. i love this place. however, as mentioned, the smoke can really be a problem here. especially late at night when all the drunks and truckers are there. it seems the restaurant's seating is about 75% smoking/25% non. but didn't i hear that Michigan is finally getting with the times and banning smoking this year? if true, i may just have to bump this up to a 5.
